Centum’s James Mworia wins AABLA Business Leader of the Year
AA – Centum Investment Group CEO James Mworia won the AABLA’s East Africa Business Person of the Year Award. The award was given in a colorful ceremony at DusitD2 Nairobi on Tuesday evening, 15th September 2015. The award recognizes transformational leadership on the African Continent.
Mr. Mworia’s tenure at the helm of Centum has seen the company implement various projects with the potential to change the face of the region. For instance, through Amu Power and Akiira power plants, Centum has a pipeline of approximately 1190 MW that will provide at least 33% of the power generation capacity in Kenya once complete.
In real estate, Centum is developing Two Rivers Development, a complete urban node in Nairobi’s diplomatic blue zone. Two Rivers will be a mixed use development including offices, residential property, retail, hotels and recreational areas. The development will be a smart city integrating ICT in the management of utilities, security, transport health and education. The anchor of the Two Rivers Project is a 65,500 SQM mall that is one of the largest in Africa.
Centum is also developing Pearl Marina, a 389 acre waterfront city in Uganda, on the shores of Lake Victoria. Additionally, the company secured 10,500 acres ideal for a mixed use development in Kilifi County. In the education sector, earlier this year, Centum announced a deal with SABIS and Investbridge International to set up twenty K12 schools across the continent. The first of these schools will be built in Kenya.
Mr. James Mworia has led Centum Investment since 2008. During his tenure, Centum’s Net Asset Value has grown more than seven times from USD 84 million to USD 480 million as at 31st March 2015. The Company is currently on its 2014/2019 strategic period. Dubbed Centum 3.0, the strategy will see Centum shift from a portfolio manager to a creator of investment-grade opportunities in 8 specific sectors: Financial Services, Real Estate, Fast Moving Consumer Goods, Power, Agribusiness, Healthcare, Education and ICT. The Projects Centum is undertaking under this strategy will change the face of business in Africa.
The All African Business Leaders Awards, in collaboration with CNBC Africa, celebrates commitment to excellence, continued innovation in business practice and strategy. The awards recognize transformational leadership on the African continent and are held across the continent from East Africa, West Africa, and Southern Africa. Mr. James Mworia will represent the region in the African Business Leadership Awards’ which shall bring together winners from all 3 regions at Sandton Centre, Johannesburg in November 2015.
The finalists were vetted by a panel of judges drawn from across different fields in business. For the East Africa Business Leader of the Year category, the judges looked for someone who exemplifies outstanding leadership in business. They had to have achieved positive financial results, increased shareholder value, and provided sound management, proven corporate governance, and demonstrated innovation, best business practices and accountability, together with intangible qualities such as integrity and vision. Mr. Mworia beat four other prominent business leaders to emerge top in the category.
